Introduction

This guide is written to help anyone who has submitted a personal tax return (self-assessment tax return) to HMRC, and has a tax bill to pay.

Throughout this guide we cover what Self-Assessment is, when a Self-Assessment tax bill is due to be paid and the different ways of paying this tax bill to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).

What is Self-Assessment?

Self-Assessment is a way of UK residents paying tax to HMRC. If you are self-employed or a director of a limited company but have income that is not through PAYE for example you need to complete a self-assessment tax return.

Once you have filed your self-assessment tax return with HMRC you will know if you have tax to pay.

When is my Self-Assessment tax bill due to be paid?

Your self-assessment tax bill is due to be paid to HMRC no later than the 31st January the year following the last tax year.

Example

For tax year ending 05 April 2021, your self-assessment tax bill will need to be paid no later than 31 January 2022.

What information do I need?

You will need your 11-character payment reference when you pay.

This reference is your 10-digit unique taxpayer reference (UTR) followed by the letter K.

Ways to pay

You can pay your self-assessment tax bill the following ways. We recommend you check your bank's transaction limits and processing times before making payment. Please ensure you allow enough time for your payment to reach HMRC before the deadline. You can view the payment processing times for each payment method below.

Online or telephone banking, CHAPS, BACS

How long will my payment take to reach HMRC?

  • Faster payments (online/telephone banking): same or next day
  • CHAPS payments: same day if you pay within your bank's processing times
  • BACS payments: usually 3 working days

By debit or corporate credit card online

There is a fee if you pay by corporate credit card. There is no fee if you pay by personal debit card. Visit tax.service.gov.uk/pay to make payment.

How long will my payment take to reach HMRC?

Allow 3 working days for your payment to reach HMRC.
